Summary: Lost in Apathy
Comment: Hello LIS & sci fi fans,
Lets see, where to begin.....Picture Quality is excellent, your screen will explode in eye popping color. And the Packaging is nice, no complaints there. And just to be clear, i have not seen every episode yet in this volume. So far, the episode i like the most is "the promised planet". "The time merchant" and "target Earth" are good too. The "princess of space" was so boring i actually started to fall asleep. That was so bad WOW it hurts me brain to think about it. lol
Although to be fair, i suppose it is possible that there was a morsel of hidden meaning that escaped my mind. So i will force mysef to watch it again some time to try to pick up on that elusive thread to see what may unravel. You see it is meaning that trips my trigger. It is not so much special effects, or action....i like to look for the silver lining of meaning hidden within the black hole of cartoonish comedy that LIS gravitated into. There are sometimes deep concepts being conveyed through the stories portrayed. Strange where you can find little treasures for your mind. I suppose maybe because original thinking is hard for some to take much less see, which is why is must be disguised, hidden within a sugar coated comedy being televised. One must look past surface thought to recieve the deepest insight to be taught. You may realize things the writers never intended you to see, as interpritation is unique to our individual perspective, relative to experience and present circumstance. So i will resist the temptation to share my insights. As i do not wish to color your perceptiions with my own. Another reason the show is fun to watch is that LIS can be damn funny, sometimes un-intentionaly so. Such as in "target Earth" when the clones of the Robinsons are in their "birthing" tubes and emerge from their bubble wrap cocoons lol. And the scene in "the promised planet" where prof. Robinson walks into a room to find his daughter Penny dancing on a pool table to hippie tunes, lol, his reaction is great, Penny!! get down from there !! then the aliens turn up the tunes and lights and the prof.was overwhelmed by the force of the hippie vibes and pushed back out the door to collapse unconscious in a chair, lol ...Moments such as these are welcome as they add another dimension of enjoyability to the LIS series. And then there is the "trip down memory lane" aspect of this. I purchased, in addition to the season 3 vol 2, the collectors edition of the 1st two pilots for the series. as I wanted to review how the series began & ended. well, i was awash with memories surfacing that had been long forgotten. I could remember my joy and amazement upon seeing the jupiter 2 for the 1st time [or gemini 12 as it was called in the original pilot] These were revolutionary concepts, that filled me with a great sense of hope and expectation for the future. Conversly, i also remembered a sense of betrayal as these hopes & dreams were crushed by the shows rapid decent into a comic book like portrayal of the creators original vision. I will never forget that feeling of dismay, i knew then that something foul was afoot. And until recently never knew what. .. it seems as though the show "Batman" hit the tv screens with such success that it was stealing away viewers from LIS. So they re-tooled the LIS show. They took Batmans formula of success of colorful camp and tried to apply it to their show, In the hopes of re-capturing their former audience. Then there is the Johnathan Harris factor in the equation. He began re-writing his lines to suit his personal taste. That is the main reason Dr. Smith morphed from a dangerous villian, to a comedic, clutsy clown. Harris feared his character was going to be killed off and he would be unemployed. So he decided to attempt to engratiate himself to the audience. Which actually worked, when the producers caught on they looked the other way. As a result, we got a sugar coated version of the shows former vision. That i believe, was not a good decision. But so it was and so it is, the allmighty dollar draws the bottom line in show biz. And my bottom line is, Despite it's flaws, i highly recommend LIS S3 V2 without pause. I titled this review as i did due to the fact that the series ended without ending. Such Apathy to me as a fan is somewhat offending.
Ok now i want to talk about the writers, how they crafted a clever hook which was then in us set. Who among us did not dispise the incompetent, effeminate, treacherous Dr. Smith ? Who among us did not identify with Don's anger towards Dr. Smith ?...Who Among us did not want to see Don pummel Smith so much that we allmost tried to will Don to do it ? lol...i think you see where i am going with this. Now heres the really clever part. They never let Don do it because they knew that was one reason why we kept tunning in each week. To see if this was the day Smith was going to get his. And of course the more obvious hooks such as... Are they going to find Alpha Centauri, or Earth, or is Don Going to score with Judy ? lol and what sort of alien menace will they encounter next ?...ect. You could say LIS was a truely multi-dimensional show. And on top of it all, it has that warm, wholesome all American glow. It is a time machine of sort that transports the viewer back into an era of unprecedented American peace and prosperity. Documenting our past glory with each and every silly story.

Summary: Lost in the Past
Comment:
If you like corny plots and cheesy costumes and never missed an episode of Lost In Space when it was on Tv, then you will enjoy these DVD's. I have the entire set and when I need something clean and simple to watch I pull them out and work my way through them. ALways good for a laugh even if it's only at yourself to wonder why you ever liked it in the first place. The characters become like family. If you want to drift back to a better, simpler time if only for a few hours, I recommend "Lost in Space."

Summary: Lost In Space Season 3
Comment: For those of you who enjoy time travelling back to a simpler time, but haven't been able to find out how, then Lost In Space, Season 3 is the DVD package for you.
Sure, the SFX are cheesy, the plots simplistic, and there is an "Oh, Gosh Darn!" Serial Sensibility about it, but therein lies it's charm. It's classic 1960's TV. However, for those of you males who are the demographic known as the "Baby Boomers" there is a whole new way to look at it. Remember when Penny was an "older woman" and her sister Judy was, well ... hot ... but an adult... And "Mrs Robinson"... :) wasn't even on the radar? Well guess what? Forget about the girls... Mother Robinson is now a "Younger Woman" -- and she's a fine speciman of a female at that.
This is great TV, and something that you can watch with your kids. The serial format is a slice of Cinematic History that all can enjoy. And when you see your young sons developing a crush on Penny, well, you can marvel at how some things never change.

Summary: Farewell to the Jupiter II
Comment: It has been nostalgic and sad to watch the final episodes of season 3 of "Lost in Space." The 60s were winding down. The final episodes aired at the end of 1967 and the beginning of 1968, which saw the second season of "Star Trek" and the release of the phenomenal and ground-breaking movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." The United States was growing up in so many ways, and "Lost in Space" had failed to keep track with our expectations.
Looking back, these final nine episodes had some excellent moments, and hint at what this series could have been. Among the best episodes is "Target: Earth," where a group of aliens that are similar to each other attempt to duplicate the individualism of earthlings. "The Time Merchant" was one of the best episodes of the entire series. Chronos the Time Merchant plans to take the remainder of the Robinsons' lives because they inadvertently interfered with his travel plans. "Fugitives in Space" provided a bit of deception to keep me guessing how the episode was going to end.
Unfortunately, the series also keep the corny hokum that made season 2 weak. "The Promised Planet" had a great idea at its core, but the music and mod light betray its 1960's heritage. "Space Beauty" may have highlighted Judy's beauty, but Judy was too easily manipulated into entering a beauty contest that she was too smart to enter. This episode was one of the lower points of this volume. "The Great Vegetable Rebellion" is an episode that gets a lot of criticism. This episode was not as bad as some people make it out, but it was a low point for the series.
You can count the number of science fiction television shows that left a lasting impression on viewers on your fingers. As campy as "Lost in Space" sometimes was, it left an impression that is nearly as strong for many people as the impression that "Star Trek" left. "Star Trek" was a much bolder show and tried to present some of the infinite possibilities that exist in the universe. "Lost in Space" reached only a brief distance into the future and was the first non-animated television show that focused on a family of space pioneers. Plot holes abound in "Lost in Space." Dr. Smith has to be one of the most obnoxious central characters in a television show ever. And yet, I retain my fondness for this show.
I think it is easy in this age of sophisticated digital effects and a chain of quality and classic science fiction television that extends back to at least the original "Outer Limits" to look down on "Lost in Space" as unworthy of appreciation. However, the series was influential and it was memorable. Had Irwin Allen maintained the serious nature of the show, it is possible that "Lost in Space" would have been the landmark television show that "Star Trek" became. I know I watched both, and I know I enjoyed "Star Trek" when it came out the year following the debut of "Lost in Space." I considered myself lucky that two such wonderful shows were on at the same time.
I look back on "Lost in Space" with fondness. I enjoyed watching all three seasons. Perhaps my fondness is just nostalgia. If so, I will revel in my nostalgia and just maybe I will watch all the episodes again.
As a side note, after being a little boy and watching "Lost in Space," I admired Will Robinson a lot. I credit Will being a role model for my later years when I studied electronics and physics in college. This show may have been campy, but I am glad that I was encouraged by a show like this one. Perhaps we should all wish for more campy science fiction shows to encourage children to become scientists and engineers.

Summary: Lost in Space - Season 3, Vol. 2
Comment: I wish we could have bought Seasons 2 and 3 as complete sets. Vol. 1 was not available when we bought Vol. 2. But we have become addicted and are enjoying seeing these episodes once again.
